GANODERMA GENOME HAD BEEN FULLY SEQUENCED

From a presentation at the IRRDB Biotechnology Workshop, May 30 – June 1, 2011, it was known that sequence of Ganoderma genome has been recently completed at ACGT, a Genting Company, in Malaysia.

EVIDENCE OF GANODERMA INFECTION ON COFFEE TREE

Infection of Ganoderma on living coffee tree was found during our visit on Saturday, 2 April 2011, at an experimental garden of Bogor Agricultural School, in Cikaret, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. Primordial stage of its fruiting body was found protruding from the infection site at the basal stem of a decaying tree. The infected tree produced smaller number of leaves, mostly pale yellowish green in color. Several nearby trees had died probably due to Ganoderma infection. Species identification has not been made.

GANODERMA AS A HOT ISSUE

Basal stem rot incited by Ganoderma became a hot issue raised and discussed in all presentations in a two-day seminar conducted by GAPKI in Medan, 29-30 March 2011, in commemoration of 100 Year Palm Oil Industry in Indonesia. Follow-up meeting on Ganoderma was conducted on 31 March 2011. Yes, this is only after many plantations have been destroyed by Ganoderma. To get this level of destruction, it may take 25 years for Ganoderma to build up its capacity by patient, taking advantage of the ignorant planters.

GANODERMA ON OIL PALM IN COLOMBIA ?

Someone was sending us picture of a fruiting body found on oil palm in Columbia and asking if it is Ganoderma? Based on its appearance, the answer is yes. It look likes Ganoderma applanatum to us. Detail information is not available whether it was found on dead or living palm. Further investigation is needed. Species which is known pathogenic to oil palm in Indonesia and Malaysia is G. boninense.
